Leavenworth — Things to Do
Every December weekend, the whole town transforms into a holiday wonderland. Here is what to expect and how to make the most of it.
Things to Do Guide →beExploring / Leavenworth
From the day after Thanksgiving through Christmas Eve, Leavenworth transforms into one of the most celebrated holiday destinations in the Pacific Northwest. Over half a million lights cover every building and tree in the downtown area, carolers fill the streets, Santa arrives at the Gazebo on weekends, and the beer halls and restaurants run at full capacity.
The experience is genuinely worth it — but it requires planning. December weekends sell out months in advance. The parking situation is challenging. And the crowds are real. This guide covers everything you need to visit without the frustration.

The main event
Every building and tree in the downtown area is covered in lights — over half a million in total. The effect against the snow-covered Cascade backdrop is genuinely stunning. The lights run every day from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. throughout December and continue through the end of February.
Evening, obviously — but the hours right after sunset (around 4:30–6 p.m. in December) hit the sweet spot before the crowd peaks. Midweek visits are noticeably quieter than weekends.
Horse-drawn carriage rides run through downtown during the festival season. Find them at the Mai Pole on Front Street, just west of the Gazebo. First-come, first-served — they fill up quickly on busy evenings.
Outside of town
Several operators offer sleigh rides in the Leavenworth area, ranging from a few miles outside of town to about 15 miles away. Advance reservations are strongly recommended during December weekends.

The Leavenworth Reindeer Farm, just outside of downtown, has a herd of caribou and offers hands-on educational tours. Families can hand-feed and interact with the animals. During Christmas season they also have a campfire and Santa's sleigh on site.
Leavenworth Reindeer Farm →Front Street Park has a free sledding hill right in the heart of downtown, steps from the lights and the beer halls. For more serious sledding, the Leavenworth Winter Sports Club operates a tubing park at the ski hill with a rope tow and 100 vertical feet of drop.

Parking in downtown Leavenworth on December weekends is extremely difficult. Street parking exists but fills up fast, and paid lots throughout town are your best in-town option. Pay via the ParkMobile app for street spots.
The Wilkommen Park & Ride is located behind the Safeway just east of town. A free shuttle runs every day 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. during the festival season. You can also flag down the shuttle along Highway 2 heading toward town. This is the easiest, least stressful option on busy weekends.

Rushing through. The festival rewards a slow pace — stop for mulled wine, watch the carolers, and let the atmosphere sink in rather than checking boxes.
