Where does this wildfire data come from?

Fire perimeters come from the Washington Department of Natural Resources (WA DNR) Large Fires dataset. Polygons represent final or best-available perimeters compiled from DNR, NWCC, NIFC, and related sources. The map shows fires of 100 acres or larger.

Why do I see burned forest that does not match a perimeter?

Perimeters are simplified outlines of mapped fires — they are not perfect trail-level burn edges. Forests can reburn, burn in a mosaic, or show old damage from fires below the 100-acre cutoff or outside this dataset. Use the map as a guide to which named fires affected an area, not as a legal or safety boundary.

How are counties assigned?

WA DNR fire records do not include county. Each fire is assigned to a county by placing its perimeter centroid inside Washington county boundaries. Fires that span multiple counties are listed under the county that contains the centroid.

Can I use this for evacuation or current fire danger?

No. This page is for historical context and trip curiosity — for example, understanding which past fires shaped a hiking area. For active incidents, evacuations, and air quality, use official sources such as local emergency management, InciWeb, and WA DNR / NWCC situation reports.

How often is the map updated?

The site serves a static extract of the WA DNR layer that is refreshed periodically. New season fires appear after they are finalized in the DNR dataset and this extract is regenerated.
