Overview

The Seattle Busyness Calendar gives you a month-by-month view of how busy the city is likely to be on any given day. Each day scores from 0 to 100, built from three data sources: Port of Seattle cruise ship schedules, major sports team home game calendars, and confirmed large citywide events. The result is a single comparable number you can use to plan sightseeing days around peak crowds.

Most Seattle travel advice tells you when cruise season or Seafair is — but not how those events stack up day by day against each other, or how they affect specific parts of the city. A Mariners day game at T-Mobile Park crowds SoDo and the nearby waterfront in the early afternoon but may clear by evening. Three cruise ships in port on a Seahawks Sunday is a different situation entirely. The index surfaces that distinction so you can pick your days with better information.

The calendar is most useful for planning first-time visits and for timing trips around high-traffic hotspots like Pike Place Market, the Seattle waterfront, the Space Needle, and Capitol Hill. It is a forward-looking planning tool based on events known in advance — not a real-time foot traffic counter.

Things to Know

Cruise Season (Apr–Oct)

Seattle is one of the busiest Alaska cruise ports in the world. On peak days, 3–5 ships are in port simultaneously, each carrying 2,000–5,000 passengers. The waterfront, Pioneer Square, and Pike Place Market feel this most directly.

Mariners & Seahawks

T-Mobile Park and Lumen Field sit side by side in SoDo. Home games — especially day games and Sunday afternoon kickoffs — create significant traffic on the waterfront corridor and transit. A cruise day that overlaps with a home game is a meaningful step up in busyness.

Sounders & Kraken

Sounders FC also plays at Lumen Field. The Kraken play at Climate Pledge Arena near Seattle Center, affecting Lower Queen Anne and South Lake Union rather than downtown — a different crowd pattern than the SoDo teams.

Major Citywide Events

Seafair Air Show (late July–August), Seattle Pride (June), Bumbershoot (Labor Day weekend), Emerald City Comic Con (March), and the Seattle Marathon (November) are all tracked. The index flags these with neighborhood-level impact notes.

Quietest Months

January through March and November are consistently the least busy — no cruise season, no outdoor festivals, and a lighter sports calendar. If you have flexibility, these months offer the most accessible version of Seattle.

How the Score Works

Each day scores 0–100 based on cruise ship volume, sports attendance estimates, and event size. A score of 0 means no identified drivers. A 90+ (Extreme) typically means a large cruise day, a sold-out stadium game, and a major citywide event all land on the same day.
