Alaia Belize, Autograph Collection sits on Mar de Tumbo Beach on the south end of Ambergris Caye, about 2km (1.2 miles) from San Pedro town. It's a newer property split between three room types: waterfront Villas and single-bedroom Vista Rooms built new from scratch, and two-bedroom Reef House suites set in the resort's original, renovated building.
This guide covers what staying here is actually like, from room types and pools to dining, the beach, and where it falls short, based on a firsthand stay rather than brochure copy.
A quick read on who Alaia suits, and where it falls short, so you can decide in under a minute.

Three-bedroom, waterfront villas with a private plunge pool, a full kitchen, and a living room. Every villa sits directly along the beach, part of the new construction built alongside the Vista Rooms.
Single-bedroom hotel rooms, also built new. Choose a resort view or an ocean view depending on which side of the property you book.
Two-bedroom suites with a full kitchen and living room, set in the property's original building before Alaia's renovation. Like the Vista Rooms, resort-view and ocean-view options are both available.

Main pool with a swim-up bar, plus a second pool next to the Reef House rooms. Every villa also has its own private plunge pool.
Vista Rooftop has its own infinity pool overlooking the ocean, with glass portals in the pool floor that look straight down to the hotel entrance below.
Four dining venues on property: Sea Salt, The Terrace, Arlie's Lounge, and Vista Rooftop, plus poolside food and drink service.
Full-service spa on site.
A large beach with plenty of loungers, though a seawall makes it better for sunbathing than swimming, and it can get covered in sargassum seaweed during the rainy season.

Sargassum is floating brown seaweed that drifts in on Caribbean currents and washes up on the beach at Alaia. It's seasonal and it varies a lot year to year — here's the typical pattern to plan around.
The heaviest buildup of the year on the east-facing shore. Even actively-cleared beaches can have mats of seaweed at the waterline.
Typical pattern · not live data
This reflects the typical seasonal pattern shown in NOAA and University of South Florida Sargassum Watch bulletins for the western Caribbean, not a real-time reading. Some years are much heavier or lighter than average, and conditions can shift within a season.

Rent a golf cart. It's about 2km to San Pedro town, and while technically walkable, the heat and humidity make it not worth attempting.
Ask about pickup from the property's private dock. Many boat tours can grab you there directly instead of meeting in town.
There's a free golf cart parking lot directly across the street if you rent your own cart.
Head up to Vista Rooftop at least once. The infinity pool and lounge overlooking the ocean is one of the best spots on property.
The breakfast buffet selection is a little limited, but it includes a few made-to-order options, and a la carte is available if you want more.

Don't book Alaia expecting a swim-in-the-ocean beach vacation. A seawall blocks direct ocean swimming and there's no on-site snorkeling.
Don't assume every room is brand new. The Reef House occupies the original, renovated building, while the Villas and Vista Rooms were built from scratch.
Don't expect to walk to dinner spontaneously. The property sits a bit outside town, so plan on a golf cart or taxi for restaurants off-property.
Don't skip checking the season. Sargassum seaweed piles up on the beach during the rainy season, so beach photos can look very different depending on when you visit.
