Lodging on Ambergris Caye ranges from budget guesthouses in San Pedro town to full-service beachfront resorts on the quieter north and south ends of the island. Best for an all-in beach getaway
Full-service beachfront resorts with pools, on-site restaurants, and water-sports desks. Most are concentrated north and south of San Pedro town rather than in the center, so you trade walkability for more space and quiet.
Best for a smaller, personal stay
Small, independently run hotels — often a handful of rooms, a shared pool, and a more intimate feel than the larger resorts. Many sit right in or near San Pedro town, an easy walk to restaurants and tour operators.
Best for families and longer stays
Condos and private homes with kitchens are widely available through the usual booking platforms, ranging from simple in-town units to beachfront villas on the north and south ends of the island.
Best for budget travelers
A handful of budget guesthouses and a couple of hostels are based in San Pedro town, the cheapest way to stay on the island while still being walkable to everything downtown.

First-time visitors, walkability, budget stays
The center of the island and the most practical base — restaurants, tour operators, golf-cart rentals, and the water taxi dock are all within walking distance. Busier and louder than the outskirts, especially near the main strip.
Couples, resort stays, quiet
Across the river cut from town (reached by a small ferry or bridge), the north end has more upscale resorts and a quieter, more spread-out feel. You will want a golf cart to reach restaurants and activities in town.
A mix of local feel and beach access
South of San Pedro town blends local neighborhoods with beachfront condos and a handful of resorts — a middle ground between the energy of downtown and the seclusion of the north end.
West-facing sunsets, a different pace
A small but growing number of rentals sit on the island's west side near Secret Beach. Calm, current-free water and sunset views are the draw, at the cost of being farther from the main restaurant and tour scene in town.

Do I want to walk everywhere?
Stay in San Pedro town — restaurants, tours, and golf-cart rentals are all within a few blocks.
Am I traveling with family or staying a week or more?
A condo or vacation rental with a kitchen is usually more comfortable and cost-effective than a string of hotel nights.
Do I want a full resort experience?
Look north or south of town, where most of the larger beachfront resorts are based.
Is a west-facing sunset a priority?
Look at rentals near Secret Beach — just budget extra golf-cart time to reach town.
Am I working with a tighter budget?
San Pedro town has the guesthouses and hostels, and rates drop noticeably in the wet season (June–November).

Weigh walkability against quiet before booking. San Pedro town puts everything in reach on foot; north and south island stays trade that for more space, at the cost of needing a golf cart for anything beyond the resort.
Look for a kitchen if staying five or more nights. Grocery runs plus a couple of home-cooked meals meaningfully cut costs on a longer trip.
If sunset views matter, look specifically at west-facing listings near Secret Beach — most of San Pedro town and the east side face the open Caribbean, not the sunset.

Booking last-minute for the dry season (December–April). The best-located properties fill up weeks ahead, especially around holidays.
Choosing a north- or south-island resort without budgeting for a golf cart. Anything outside San Pedro town requires your own transportation to reach restaurants and tours.
Booking wet-season dates without trip insurance or a flexible cancellation policy. Rates are lowest then, but so is protection against a storm disrupting your trip.
