Overview

Ambergris Caye packs a wide range of Caribbean experiences into a small island. Most activities depart directly from San Pedro town, and the barrier reef sits close enough offshore that even a half-day trip delivers world-class snorkeling.

This guide covers the main things to do — with practical notes on booking, cost, and timing for each.

Snorkeling & Diving

Snorkeling & Diving
All visitorsFirst-time snorkelersCertified divers

Hol Chan Marine Reserve and neighboring Shark Ray Alley are the two stops nearly every visitor makes, and together they're the best introduction to the reef — clear, current-swept water, parrotfish, moray eels, sea turtles, and nurse sharks close enough to snorkel alongside. Certified divers with more time can push out to the Great Blue Hole or the closer, fish-rich Turneffe Atoll.

Secret Beach

Secret Beach
GroupsSunset chasersNon-swimmers

Secret Beach sits on the island's west side, facing the mainland instead of the open Caribbean — shallow, current-free, bathtub-calm water that's easy for kids and non-swimmers, plus unobstructed sunset views. What used to be an actual hidden spot is now a cluster of beach bars and restaurants built out over the water on docks, each with their own swim area, hammocks, and loungers.

How to get around

Golf-Cart Touring San Pedro

Golf-Cart Touring San Pedro
All visitorsIndependent travelers

There are almost no regular cars on Ambergris Caye — golf carts are the primary form of transportation, and renting one for a day or two is as much an activity as a practicality. San Pedro town itself is compact and walkable, but a cart opens up the rest of the island: the northern and southern stretches beyond downtown, Secret Beach, and quieter residential areas with their own restaurants and views.

Half-day island escape

Caye Caulker Day Trip

Caye Caulker Day Trip
Day trippersBudget travelersPhotographers

Caye Caulker is Ambergris Caye's smaller, scruffier neighbor to the south — golf carts, bikes and foot traffic, and a slogan ("Go Slow") painted on signs around the island that sums up the vibe. It's an easy water-taxi ride from San Pedro and makes a good half-day or full-day contrast to Ambergris Caye's more built-up feel, especially for a swim at The Split, a boat-cut channel that's become the island's social gathering spot.

Getting There

Water taxis run frequently between San Pedro and Caye Caulker, roughly 20–30 minutes each way. Round-trip fares run about $20–30 USD. Buy a same-day return ticket for flexibility, or a one-way if you want to catch a later boat back.

The Split

The Split is Caye Caulker's main hangout — a narrow water channel with a bar on one side, ladders into the water, and a constant stream of people swimming and drinking through the afternoon. It's the easiest way to spend a few hours on the island without planning anything further.

Full Guide

See the full Caye Caulker day trip guide → for swimming spots, feeding the tarpon, wading with stingrays, and more.

Tip: Check the ferry schedule before you go — the last boats back to San Pedro typically leave in the early evening, and missing the last one means an overnight you didn't plan for.

Full-day excursions to the mainland

Mayan Ruins & ATM Cave Tours

Mayan Ruins & ATM Cave Tours
History buffsAdventure seekersMulti-day itineraries

Ambergris Caye is an island, but some of Belize's biggest draws are on the mainland — a short flight or boat-and-drive combination away. The two standouts are the ancient Maya ruins scattered across the interior and the Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) cave, one of the most highly rated cave tours in the world.

Mayan Ruins

Altun Ha is the closest major ruin site to San Pedro, a compact set of temples about an hour from Belize City that's easy to pair with a half-day tour. Lamanai and Xunantunich are larger, more remote sites further into the mainland, reached by a longer combination of river boat or drive, and are usually done as a full-day trip.

ATM Cave Tour

The Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) cave tour involves wading and swimming through a river cave to see Maya ceremonial artifacts and skeletal remains left largely undisturbed for over a thousand years. It's consistently rated among the best cave tours anywhere, but access is tightly controlled — cameras have been banned inside since 2012, and you'll need closed-toe shoes and a reasonable level of fitness for the wading, climbing, and swimming involved.

Other Mainland Day Trips

Cave tubing and zip-lining near Belmopan are often paired together for a full day of adventure, and the Belize Zoo, a small, well-regarded sanctuary for rescued native wildlife including jaguars and tapirs, makes an easy stop for anyone driving between the coast and the interior.

Tip: These are mainland trips, not something to squeeze in casually — expect an early departure from San Pedro, often before sunrise for ATM, and a full day of travel. If your itinerary includes any time on the mainland before or after Ambergris Caye, it's often easier to book these tours from there instead of doing the round trip from the island.

Sunset Sailing Cruise

Sunset Sailing Cruise
CouplesGroupsPhotographers

A number of operators in San Pedro run sunset sailing trips along the leeward side of the island, usually with drinks and sometimes a light dinner included. It's a low-effort way to see the coastline from the water and close out a beach day without needing to plan anything more active — a good pairing with a morning snorkel trip or a Secret Beach afternoon.

Booking

Trips run 2–3 hours and typically cost $40–70 USD per person depending on boat and inclusions. Book through your hotel or directly with operators along the beachfront in town; same-day or next-day availability is usually easy to find outside of peak holiday weeks.

Quirky San Pedro nightlife

Chicken Drop & Hermit Crab Races

Chicken Drop & Hermit Crab Races
GroupsFamiliesA silly night out

Two of San Pedro's most beloved bar traditions, and proof that Ambergris Caye's nightlife doesn't take itself too seriously. Neither requires any planning beyond showing up at the right bar on the right night, and both are casual and cheap to play.

Chicken Drop

Held Thursdays at Los Gringos Bar and Grill, on the beach at the Corona Del Mar Hotel, the Chicken Drop is exactly what it sounds like: a grid of numbered squares is laid out, you buy a ticket for a square, and a chicken gets placed in the middle and fed until nature takes its course. Whoever's square it poops on wins the pot. There are several rounds over the course of the night, and in low season it can take a bit for a round to fill up as they wait to sell all the squares.

Hermit Crab Races

Hermit crab races run Tuesdays year-round at Nauti Crab, with an extra night added on Thursdays during high season. An MC hypes up the crowd and runs the betting on each heat, with plenty of adult humor mixed in — it's a fun, rowdy bar scene but not really geared toward kids.

Flats and reef fishing destination

Fishing

Fishing
AnglersExperienced and beginner fly fishers

Belize's shallow flats are internationally known among fly anglers chasing the 'Grand Slam' — bonefish, permit, and tarpon in a single day. Ambergris Caye and the surrounding flats and mangroves give access to all three species without a long boat ride, and local guides know the water intimately. Reef fishing is a more casual option and is usually combined with other activities like snorkeling and a beach BBQ of the day's catch, rather than booked as a dedicated trip.

Booking a Guide

Full-day guided flats trips run roughly $400–600 USD for one to two anglers, typically including a skiff, guide, and gear. Guides are best booked directly through local fishing lodges or your hotel a few weeks ahead in peak season (spring is prime time for permit and tarpon).

Reef Fishing Trips

Half-day reef fishing trips are widely available and easier to book on short notice than flats charters. Many operators pair reef fishing with snorkeling and a beach BBQ, making it a relaxed group option rather than a specialized angling trip.

Manatee Watching

Manatee Watching
FamiliesWildlife lovers

Swallow Caye Wildlife Sanctuary, a short boat ride from San Pedro, protects one of the healthiest manatee populations in the region and is the best place for viewing them. Boat tours drift slowly through the sanctuary's shallow water, watching for manatees surfacing to breathe. Full day boat tours often include stops to view manatees as well, though snorkeling with the manatees is typically not allowed.

What to Expect

Tours are typically boat-based viewing only — swimming with manatees is restricted to protect the animals. Half-day trips run $50–80 USD per person and are often combined with a stop at a nearby caye for swimming or lunch.

Full Day Boat Tours

Full-day boat tours that include a stop in Caye Caulker typically offer manatee viewing around Caye Caulker. It's a convenient way to combine island-hopping and snorkeling with a chance at seeing manatees, though sightings depend on the animals and are never guaranteed.

Tips for Visiting

schedule

Book Blue Hole trips and fishing guides as early as you can. These fill up weeks ahead in the dry season (December–April), and last-minute availability is limited.

directions_car

Rent a golf cart for at least one day. San Pedro town is walkable, but Secret Beach, the island's quieter stretches, and north-island resorts are all much easier to reach with your own cart.

wb_sunny

Bring reef-safe sunscreen. Belize restricts sunscreens with oxybenzone and octinoxate to protect the barrier reef, and some tour operators will check before you get in the water.

water

Watch the forecast if traveling June through November. Belize sits in the Atlantic hurricane belt, and while direct hits are uncommon, tropical storms and heavy rain are more likely in this window — trip insurance is worth considering.

Common Mistakes

directions_boat

Missing the last water taxi back from Caye Caulker. Check the return schedule before you go — the last boats leave in the early evening, earlier than many visitors expect.

people

Visiting Secret Beach on a weekend if you want a quiet afternoon. It gets considerably busier and louder with day-trip crowds on Saturdays and Sundays than on weekdays.

schedule

Not building a buffer day around a Blue Hole dive trip. It's a long open-water crossing that gets canceled or rescheduled in rough weather.
