Ambergris Caye — Belize
Calm, west-facing water, a cluster of dock bars, and the best sunset view on the island.

Secret Beach sits on the west side of Ambergris Caye, facing the mainland instead of the open Caribbean — which means shallow, calm, current-free water that's easy for kids and non-swimmers, plus an unobstructed view of the sunset. What used to be an actual hidden spot is now a cluster of beach bars and restaurants built out over the water on docks, each with its own swim area, hammocks, and loungers.
This guide covers how to get there, what the bar scene is like, and the best time to go.

The most flexible option. From San Pedro town, it is roughly 15–20 minutes across a bumpy cross-island road to the west side. A cart also lets you leave whenever you want instead of waiting on a scheduled boat.
Several of the beach bars run their own boat transfers directly from docks in San Pedro town, usually for a small fee or free with a minimum spend. Ask your hotel which operators run transfers on the day you plan to go.

Secret Beach faces west toward the mainland instead of the open Caribbean, which means shallow, current-free, almost bathtub-calm water — a real contrast to the more exposed east-facing beaches near San Pedro. It's genuinely easy for kids and non-swimmers.
Because it faces west, Secret Beach is largely spared from the sargassum seaweed that piles up on the island's east-facing beaches during the rainy season. That makes it one of the more reliable spots to swim when sargassum has other beaches covered in seaweed.
What used to be an actual hidden, undeveloped stretch of coastline is now a cluster of beach bars and restaurants built out on docks over the water, each with its own swim area, loungers, and hammocks. Some lean loud with DJs and volleyball; others are quieter and more restaurant-focused. Many of the bars also set up tables right out in the calm water, with waiters wading out to deliver food and drinks — it's a big part of the Secret Beach experience, though you can just as easily stay dry on the loungers on shore. Food and drinks are pay-as-you-go, and some spots have a minimum spend to use their loungers.
Beyond just swimming, there are jet skis for rent and speed boat rides — expect riders to cruise by on jet skis trying to talk you into renting one. You can also get a massage on the pier off the beach. Kids will love the floating inflatable obstacle course at Secret Beach Waterpark Bar & Grill, which is free to use if you're a paying patron.
Because Secret Beach faces west, it has an unobstructed view of the sunset over the water — one of the few spots on the island where you get that framing. Late afternoon through sunset is the busiest and most atmospheric window.

Have a specific bar or venue in mind before you arrive by golf cart. Pulling up to a dozen dock bars at once with nowhere obvious to park can be a little overwhelming — pick a spot ahead of time and head straight there.
Time your visit for late afternoon through sunset. The west-facing water makes this one of the best sunset spots on the island, and the light is better than midday.
Bring cash. Many of the smaller dock bars are cash-only or have unreliable card readers given the remote setup.
Bring your own beach towels and a float if you have one. Most spots do not provide either, though floats can usually be rented on site if you would rather not pack one.

Not accounting for the long, bumpy cross-island drive. Budget real time for it, and make sure your golf cart has enough gas before you set off — there is no fuel stop out at Secret Beach.
Going at midday and leaving before sunset. The best light and the calmest crowd shift is late afternoon — don't rush out right after lunch.
Assuming every bar takes cards. Bring enough cash for food, drinks, and any lounger minimums.
Expecting to find open sand to lay a towel down on. Nearly the entire shoreline is taken up by dock bars and restaurants, so plan on renting a spot from one of them rather than finding empty beach.
