Overview

Ambergris Caye has no international airport of its own — nearly every visitor arrives first at Belize City's Philip S.W. Goldson International Airport (BZE), then connects onward by a short domestic flight or a water taxi. If you're combining Belize with a Yucatán trip, a land crossing from Chetumal, Mexico is also a practical route in.

This guide breaks down each option — cost, time, and what to expect — so you can pick the right one for your itinerary and budget.

Fastest option

Fly from Belize City (BZE)

Nearly all international flights into Belize land at Philip S.W. Goldson International Airport (BZE) near Belize City. From there, Tropic Air and Maya Island Air both run frequent short hops to San Pedro Airstrip (SPR) — about 20 minutes in the air on small propeller planes, with flights roughly every 30–60 minutes during the day.

Cost & Booking

One-way fares typically run $80–130 USD. Book directly with Tropic Air or Maya Island Air; both have counters at BZE for same-day standby if you land without a booked connection.

Luggage

Small planes have tighter baggage limits than international carriers — usually around 30 lbs (checked) plus a small carry-on. Overweight bags may be charged extra or bumped to a later flight.

Cheaper, scenic alternative

Water Taxi from Belize City

The San Pedro Belize Express water taxi runs several times daily from the Marine Terminal in Belize City to San Pedro, usually stopping at Caye Caulker along the way. The crossing takes about 75–90 minutes.

Cost & Booking

Fares run roughly $25–35 USD one-way — noticeably cheaper than flying. Tickets can be bought at the terminal or in advance online during busier periods.

What to Expect

Open-air, high-speed boats that can get choppy in rough weather. Fine for most travelers, but worth knowing if you are prone to seasickness — an aisle or center seat helps.

From Mexico

Crossing from Chetumal or Cancún

If you're combining Belize with a Yucatán trip, the land border at Chetumal, Mexico connects to Corozal, Belize, from which a separate water taxi (San Pedro Belize Water Taxi) runs to Ambergris Caye — often faster than routing through Belize City.

From Cancún or Tulum

Bus to Chetumal (4–5 hours from Cancún), cross the border, then take the Corozal–San Pedro water taxi (about 2 hours). Some travelers instead fly Cancún → Belize City on a connecting flight and take the puddle-jumper from there — faster but usually pricier.

Border Crossing

Standard passport control on both sides; expect it to take longer during peak holiday travel. Confirm current entry requirements for Belize before you travel.

Connecting within Belize

From Placencia or San Ignacio

If your trip includes other parts of Belize, both Tropic Air and Maya Island Air fly direct routes connecting Placencia and Belize City to San Pedro, and a domestic flight from San Ignacio (near the Cayo District) connects through Belize City as well.

Timing

Domestic flights are short but connections through Belize City can add layover time — check same-day connection windows when booking multi-stop itineraries.

Tips for Traveling

luggage

Pack light if you are flying the small-plane hop from Belize City. Baggage limits are tighter than international carriers, and overweight bags can mean extra fees or a delayed flight.

schedule

Build a buffer between an international arrival and your connecting flight or water taxi. Immigration and customs at BZE can take longer than expected, especially on flights arriving from the US.

payments

The water taxi is meaningfully cheaper than flying — worth considering if your schedule allows the extra hour, especially for groups or longer stays.

medication

If you are prone to seasickness, take precautions before the water taxi crossing — it is open-air and can get choppy, especially in the wet season.

Common Mistakes

block

Booking a tight connection right after an international flight. Immigration lines at Belize City can eat more time than expected — give yourself at least 90 minutes before a domestic connection.

luggage

Overpacking for the domestic flight leg. Small-plane baggage limits are stricter than what most travelers are used to on international carriers.

directions_boat

Assuming the water taxi runs on a fixed hourly schedule year-round. Frequency can shift seasonally — check current departure times before finalizing your plans.
