Overview

Leavenworth Summer Theater is a professional company in its fourth decade, and The Sound of Music at the Ski Hill Amphitheater is the show that makes a summer trip feel like a Leavenworth trip. Performances start at 8 PM. The venue opens an hour earlier. From the complimentary lot at the base of the hill it is a 15-minute walk up to the seats — or a shuttle if you cannot make the walk.

The same season also plays the air-conditioned Festhalle on Front Street. In 2026 that indoor slot was Cole Porter’s Anything Goes, with Bright Star sharing the amphitheater with The Sound of Music. The lineup changes year to year; the two venues do not. Children under 5, including infants, are not permitted at either hall. Tickets sell out — book them before you treat the show as a maybe.

This is a mapped directory of the two venues, not a season calendar. Check leavenworthsummertheater.org for dates, seating charts, and weather policy before you go.

How a Theater Night Works Here

Sound of Music is the outdoor one

The Sound of Music plays the Ski Hill Amphitheater — mountain backdrop, 8 PM curtain, 2.5-hour running time. It is the show people mean when they say they went to summer theater in Leavenworth. Other outdoor titles share that stage; the indoor title plays the Festhalle.

No children under 5

Neither venue allows children under 5, including babies in arms. That is a hard rule, not a suggestion. If the trip is built around very young kids, this is not the evening activity.

Tickets and rush seats

Buy on leavenworthsummertheater.org. Shows sell out in peak summer. Unclaimed patron seats are sometimes released as rush tickets the day before, online and at the box office — do not plan the night around that.

Weather and the walk

The amphitheater is outdoors. Check LST’s weather policy if the forecast is ugly. Complimentary parking is at the base of Ski Hill; budget 15 minutes to walk up, or arrive by 7:15 if you need the ADA shuttle. Latecomers sit in latecomer seating until intermission.

Why Go

The hillside bowl at Leavenworth Ski Hill, where The Sound of Music — and the rest of the outdoor season — plays under the lights with the Cascades behind the stage. The walk up from the lot is part of the night. Seat cushions rent for a dollar at the gate if you did not bring your own.

What to Know

  • 10701 Ski Hill Drive. Complimentary parking at the base of the hill.
  • 15-minute walk up a gentle grade to the seats. ADA shuttle; arrive by 7:15 if you need it.
  • Venue opens one hour before the 8 PM curtain. Plan to arrive 30–45 minutes early.
  • Bring a layer. Evenings cool off on the hill even after a hot day in town.

Why Go

The city’s downtown event hall on Front Street — air-conditioned, reserved seats, and the indoor title of the summer season (Anything Goes in 2026). Use it when you want the show without the hill walk, or when the forecast is not an amphitheater night.

What to Know

  • 1001 Front Street, walkable from downtown lodging.
  • Use the city’s parking map: mix of free and paid lots. Arrive 45 minutes early.
  • Some performances are 7 PM evenings; matinees run at 1 PM. Confirm the time on your ticket.
  • Latecomers are seated in latecomer seating and moved at intermission.

Tips

confirmation_number

Buy tickets when you book lodging. The Sound of Music is the first thing that sells out on a busy summer weekend.

directions_walk

At Ski Hill, the 15-minute walk is real. Wear shoes you can climb in, not the sandals you used on Front Street.

schedule

Need the shuttle? 7:15 PM is the latest you should be in the lot. Lines form.

thermostat

Pack a layer and a cushion for the amphitheater. The Festhalle is the heat-and-weather backup, not a last-minute walk-up.

Common Mistakes

child_care

Showing up with a toddler. Children under 5 are not allowed at either venue, including infants.

hourglass_empty

Arriving at 7:50 for an 8 PM amphitheater show. You will be in latecomer seating, and you will have missed the walk-up buffer.

event_busy

Treating Sound of Music as a walk-up. If it is why you came, the ticket is as important as the hotel.
