Overview
This 2–3 day family itinerary is a schedule, not an activity list. Day 1 is arrival and a short downtown loop. Day 2 is the anchor: sledding in winter, or the Alpine Coaster the rest of the year. Day 3 stays light so you are not choosing from scratch when kids are tired.
Leavenworth is easier with kids than it looks. Downtown is a few blocks, Front Street Park is in town, and Enchantment Park’s pump track and skate park sit along the river. Beer halls can wait. Ice cream and an early night are the right call after a travel day.

Getting There
From Seattle
About 2.5 hours on US-2. With kids, pack snacks for the pass and plan a mid-afternoon arrival so Day 1 stays easy. Check Stevens Pass before you leave in winter.
Stay in Town if You Can
Downtown lodging puts the sledding hill, the lights, and dinner within walking distance. That matters more with kids than a nicer room 15 minutes out. Book December weekends months ahead.
Park Once
On Lighting Festival weekends, use the Wilkommen Park & Ride behind Safeway and the free shuttle. Hunting for Front Street parking with tired kids is how evenings unravel.
Camping in Summer
Icicle Creek campgrounds are a family-friendly base if you want trails more than the village hotel. Not the December move.

If You Only Do 3 Things with Kids
One outdoor win in town
Sledding at Front Street Park in winter, or the Alpine Coaster otherwise. Kids remember the hill or the ride, not a second shop.
A short downtown loop
The Bavarian village is the setting. Keep it to a few blocks, cocoa, and ice cream — not a checklist of stores.
A river walk
Waterfront Park is the easy hike next to town. It is the outdoor extra that does not require a trailhead drive.

Plan to arrive mid-afternoon if you can. Travel days take energy out of kids, so keep expectations low. Get checked in, walk a couple of blocks of Front Street, and save the coaster or the sledding hill for Day 2.
EVENING
Downtown + Ice Cream
A short loop of the Bavarian village, a casual dinner, and ice cream. Most shops close in the early evening, so stroll before you sit down. If this is a December trip, the Christmas lights are the evening — but an early night is still the right call after a drive over the pass.
Keep the evening flexible. If kids are tired, skip the extra shop and go to bed.
The Anchor Day
Sledding or the Coaster
WINTER
Sled Front Street Park
This is the in-town outdoor win. Front Street Park's sledding hill is free, a few blocks from cocoa, and built for young kids. Bring a plastic sled. The tubing park at Ski Hill is the paid upgrade if you want a rope tow and tubes included — book that only if the hill in town is not enough.
Go in the morning. The hill packs out after lunch, and you still want downtown time later.
OTHER SEASONS
Alpine Coaster
The Alpine Coaster at Leavenworth Adventure Park drops 234 feet over nearly half a mile. Young kids ride with an adult. It sells out in summer — reserve ahead. Pair it with Enchantment Park afterward: the pump track and skate park sit along the Wenatchee River, an easy walk from downtown.
One big paid activity per day. Do not stack the coaster and a long hike.
AFTERNOON
Park Time + Easy Dinner
Let kids play without a schedule. Enchantment Park, Waterfront Park, or just Front Street. Dinner close to wherever you are staying. Skip the beer-hall wait with tired kids — that is a weekend-without-kids move.

River Walk or Slow Morning
OPTION A
Waterfront Park
The flat river walk next to town. Waterfront Park and Blackbird Island are the family hike: short, scenic, and close enough that you can bail for the car if energy drops. Icicle Gorge is a step up if kids are used to trails and the road is clear.
OPTION B
Pump Track + Skate Park
Enchantment Park along the river. The pump track works for bikes, scooters, and balance bikes. The skate park covers a range of skill levels. Bring whatever they already ride — rentals in town are not the plan on a departure morning.
OPTION C
Slow Morning
Coffee, one more loop of downtown, and the drive before Stevens Pass traffic builds. A slow morning is the right call after a coaster day or a late lights night.

Best for this itinerary
Sledding hill, lights, dinner, and the river parks are all on foot. The first lodging to sell out in December, and still the easiest base with kids.
Camping, Icicle Creek
Best in summer
Forest Service campgrounds west of town if the trip is more trails than village. Bring the usual kid camping buffer: one big activity, then camp.
Wenatchee
Best overflow
Thirty minutes east when Leavenworth is booked. A practical December fallback — you drive in for the village and drive out to sleep.

How to Pace a Family Weekend
One big activity per day
The coaster or the sledding hill, not both, and not plus a long hike. Two anchors in one day is how kids melt down before dinner.
Build in park time
Unscheduled play at Enchantment Park or Waterfront Park is not wasted time. It is usually when everyone is happiest.
Start the anchor in the morning
Day 2 is the big day. An early hill session or coaster reservation means you still have a quiet afternoon.

Tips for Visiting with Kids
Book the coaster before you arrive
Leavenworth Adventure Park sells out in peak season. Walk-ups are a gamble. If the coaster is the trip for your kids, reserve it as soon as lodging is confirmed.
Bring a sled in winter
Front Street Park is free if you have your own plastic sled. Buying one in town on a busy weekend is slower and more expensive.
Eat earlier than you would without kids
Beer-hall waits at 6 p.m. on a festival Saturday are not a family plan. Late lunch and an early dinner beat a hangry evening.
Keep Day 3 optional
A river walk or a slow coffee is a good ending. Do not force Icicle Gorge onto a Sunday when you still have Stevens Pass to cross.

Mistakes to Avoid
Overpacking the schedule
The weekend itinerary without kids can stack a beer hall, lights, and a hike. With kids, pick one outdoor win per day and stop.
Skipping downtown after dark in December
If you came for Christmas, the lights are the evening. An early dinner and a short loop still counts — you do not need to stay out until 10 p.m.
A long hike on a travel day
Icicle Gorge and Colchuck wait until energy is back. Day 1 is arrival. Day 3 is the maybe-hike.
Assuming you will find lodging in December
Festival weekends sell out months ahead. Wenatchee is the overflow. Showing up on a Saturday with kids and no room is the hard way.

An Adults-Only Weekend Instead?
Drop the coaster and the early bedtime and use the weekend plan: beer halls, lights, and a slower downtown evening. The family schedule is the same three days with a different Day 2.
