Overview
A weekend is the right amount of time for Leavenworth. This plan is winter-leaning — Bavarian downtown, Front Street sledding, and the Christmas lights after dark — with a light third day for a hike or a slower morning before you drive home.
In summer, keep the same shape and swap sledding and lights for an Icicle Creek hike and a beer-garden afternoon. Day 3 is optional. Two full days is still a complete trip.

Getting There
From Seattle
About 2.5 hours east on US-2 over Stevens Pass. The drive is part of the trip in good weather and a constraint in winter storms. Check pass conditions before you leave, especially on Sunday afternoon.
Park Once
Downtown is walkable. On Lighting Festival weekends, use the Wilkommen Park & Ride behind Safeway and the free shuttle rather than hunting for Front Street parking.
Lodging Sells Out
December weekends book months ahead. If Leavenworth is full, Wenatchee is 30 minutes east and a practical overflow. For summer weekends, Icicle Creek campgrounds are the outdoor alternative.
When to Arrive
Friday afternoon makes the whole weekend feel longer. Saturday-morning arrivals still work, but you lose the easy first-night walk and you hit peak parking.

If You Only Have a Weekend, Prioritize This
Walk downtown after dark
The village is the trip. In December that means the lights; in any season it means Front Street without rushing. This is the one thing you cannot skip.
Do one outdoor thing
Sledding at Front Street Park in winter, or an easy hike in the other seasons. Leavenworth without getting outside is only half the destination.
Sit down in a beer hall
München Haus, Bären Haus, or Icicle Brewing. Dinner is part of the pacing, not an errand between shops.

AFTERNOON
Arrive + Walk Front Street
Plan to arrive mid-afternoon if you can. Park once — downtown is compact — and walk Front Street before the evening crowds. The half-timbered facades, shops, and river at the edge of town are the reason people drive over Stevens Pass. If you are coming for Christmas, the village already looks the part in daylight; the lights are the evening show.
LATE AFTERNOON
Shops + a Warm Drink
Keep the first afternoon light. Browse a few shops, grab cocoa or coffee, and get your bearings. Kris Kringl and the other Front Street stores are denser than they look from the car — you do not need a list, just an hour of wandering. Save a sit-down meal for later so you are not eating dinner at 4 p.m. by accident.
EVENING
Beer Hall Dinner
Dinner belongs in a beer hall. München Haus, Bären Haus, and Icicle Brewing are the easy first-night picks — German lagers, pretzels, and a room that stays lively after dark. On a Lighting Festival weekend, expect a wait and put your name in before you wander.
Even in December, a layer for the walk back matters. The village cools off fast once you stop moving.

MORNING
Sled Front Street Park
This is the outdoor piece that sits inside town. Front Street Park's sledding hill is free, a few blocks from the shops, and busy in the best way on a snowy weekend. Bring your own plastic sled. If you want a rope tow and tubes included, the LT Michael Adams Tubing Park at Ski Hill is the paid alternative a short drive away.
Go in the morning. The hill packs out after lunch, and you still want the afternoon for town.
AFTERNOON
Village Time
Warm up downtown. This is the window for a longer lunch, more shops, and — on a festival weekend — gazebo music and carolers. The Christmas Lighting Festival is not a single event you watch; it is the village running on a December schedule. Use the Park & Ride shuttle if you did not park once in the morning.
EVENING
Lights After Dark
Stay out after dinner. The lights are why December weekends sell out, and they look better when you are walking, not driving. Loop Front Street, cut through the park, and do not rush it. If you visited in summer instead, this slot is a beer garden and a slow walk — same downtown, different reason to linger.
Crowds peak when the lights come on. Arriving for dinner a little early beats arriving at 7 p.m. with no plan.

Easy Hike Before You Leave
If you have the morning, get out of the village. Waterfront Park is the flat river walk next to town. Icicle Gorge is the better half-day if roads are clear — a creek loop west of town that feels like a different trip from Front Street. Save Colchuck Lake for a trip that is actually about hiking.
OPTION B
Slow Morning in Town
The realistic choice after a late lights night. Coffee, one more loop of downtown, and the drive home before Stevens Pass traffic builds. A tasting room stop works if you want a sit-down finish without another full activity.

Downtown Leavenworth
Best for this itinerary
Walking distance to Front Street, the sledding hill, the lights, and the beer halls. The first lodging to sell out in December, and still the easiest base for a short weekend.
Camping, Icicle Creek
Best in summer
Forest Service campgrounds west of town, close to the hikes this plan only samples. Not the Christmas-weekend move, but the right base if you are here for trails.
Wenatchee
Best overflow
Thirty minutes east when Leavenworth is booked or priced out. A practical December fallback — you drive in for the village and drive out to sleep.

How to Make the Most of a Weekend
Arrive early on Day 1
The more of Friday you have, the less Saturday has to carry. Even a 3 p.m. arrival gives you the village before dark.
Sled in the morning
Day 2 is your biggest day. An early hill session means you still have the afternoon for town and the evening for lights.
Do not stack alpine hiking on a Christmas weekend
Colchuck Lake is a full day. This itinerary is a village weekend with an outdoor extra, not an Enchantments trip with a German dinner.

Tips to Make This Itinerary Better
Book December lodging first
The Lighting Festival weekends sell out. If you do not have a room, the rest of this plan is harder than it needs to be. Midweek December is the relief valve.
Use the Park & Ride on festival weekends
Front Street parking is a trap on Saturday night. The shuttle runs late enough for the lights.
Bring a sled
Front Street Park is free if you have your own plastic sled. Renting or buying one in town on a busy weekend is slower and more expensive than packing it.
Keep Day 3 optional
A slow coffee and the drive home is a good ending. Do not force Colchuck onto a Sunday when you still have Stevens Pass to cross.

Mistakes to Avoid
Showing up on a December Saturday without lodging
This is the classic miss. Stay in Wenatchee, come midweek, or pick a different weekend. Do not assume a cancellation will appear at 4 p.m.
Skipping the evening
Daytime Leavenworth is pretty. After-dark Leavenworth in December is the trip. If you drive home at 3 p.m., you missed the reason people book this far ahead.
Treating it as only the village
An hour outside town — sledding, Icicle Gorge, or Waterfront Park — is what keeps a weekend from feeling like a theme-park loop.
