Overview
A Leavenworth day trip works if you are honest about the drive. From Wenatchee it is easy. From Seattle it is about 2.5 hours each way on US-2, which means a long day in the car for a short window in town. This plan is the best version of that window: park once, walk the Bavarian downtown, eat in a beer hall, and add one outdoor stop.
December weekends make the same plan harder — parking, crowds, and a dark drive home over Stevens Pass. If you can stay overnight, use the weekend itinerary instead.

Getting There
From Seattle
About 2.5 hours east on US-2 over Stevens Pass. As a day trip that is five hours of driving, so leave early and treat the pass as part of the trip. Winter storms can close or slow US-2 — check conditions before you commit.
From Wenatchee
About 30 minutes on US-2. This is the easiest day trip, and the one case where you can still make it back for a reasonable dinner at home.
From Lake Chelan
A little over an hour via US-97A and US-2. A good add-on if you are already staying in Chelan and want a Bavarian village day without changing hotels.
Park Once
Downtown is compact. On Lighting Festival weekends, use the Wilkommen Park & Ride behind Safeway and the free shuttle. Circling Front Street on a December Saturday will eat the afternoon.

Front Street is the trip. Shops, the river edge, and the Bavarian facades. If you only have four hours in town, spend them here.
Eat in a beer hall
One sit-down meal. München Haus, Bären Haus, or Icicle Brewing. Do not spend the afternoon hunting for a second restaurant.
Do one outdoor thing
Sledding in winter, Waterfront Park otherwise. A day trip that never leaves the shops feels unfinished.

Get There Before the Village Fills
Aim to be walking Front Street by late morning. The Bavarian village is the whole point of a day trip, and it is better before lunch crowds and, in December, before the evening crush. Park once and stay on foot — shops, the river edge, and the beer halls are a few blocks apart.
From Seattle, that means leaving by 7 a.m. A 10 a.m. departure turns this into a half-day in town and a dark drive home.

With one day, lunch is the sit-down meal. München Haus, Bären Haus, or Icicle Brewing puts you at a communal table without another restaurant hop later. Pretzels and a lager, then get back outside. On a festival Saturday, put your name in as you start walking town so you are not waiting at 1 p.m.

OPTION A
Sled Front Street Park
In winter, stay in town. Front Street Park's sledding hill is free, a few blocks from lunch, and the outdoor piece that still fits a day trip. Bring a plastic sled. Do not drive out to Ski Hill unless you already have extra hours.
This is the December move. You keep the car parked and you are still downtown for lights later.
OPTION B
Waterfront Park or Icicle Gorge
In other seasons, get out of the village for an hour. Waterfront Park is the flat river walk next to town. Icicle Gorge is the better half-day if you have the time and the road is clear — but it is a commitment on a Seattle day trip. Skip Colchuck. That is not a one-day add-on.

Lights or the Drive Home
DECEMBER
Stay for the Lights
If you came for Christmas, leaving at 3 p.m. misses the reason people drive over the pass. Walk Front Street after dark, then start the return. The Lighting Festival is the village after dinner, not a single show you sit down for.
Stevens Pass in the dark after a storm is the tax on this plan. Check WSDOT before you linger.
OTHER SEASONS
One More Loop, Then Go
A last walk through downtown, maybe a coffee for the pass, and the drive. You have already done the village and one outdoor stop. Do not squeeze in a second hike.

Leave Seattle early
A 7 a.m. start gives you a real afternoon. A 10 a.m. start gives you lunch and a short walk.
Park once
The village is a few blocks. Moving the car between stops is how day trips fall apart, especially in December.
Pick one outdoor stop
Sledding or a short hike, not both. Colchuck Lake is a full day of its own.
Watch Stevens Pass on the way home
Sunday evening and winter storms are when this plan gets expensive. If the pass looks ugly, leave town earlier than you want to.

Mistakes to Avoid
A December Saturday with no overnight
It can be done, but parking, crowds, and a dark pass make it the worst version of a day trip. Midweek December, or a weekend in any other month, is kinder.
Trying to hike the Enchantments
Colchuck and the core zone are not day-trip add-ons from Seattle. You will spend the day driving and hiking, and you will not see the village.
Leaving before dark in December
If Christmas lights are why you came, the afternoon is setup. The evening is the trip.
