Full Lake Chelan Guide →beExploring / Lake Chelan
Three days gives you just enough time to experience what makes Lake Chelan special, without rushing. You'll get out on the water, explore the wine country, take in a hike or a ferry ride, and still have time to slow down and enjoy the lake at your own pace.
This itinerary is designed for first-time visitors. It covers the main pillars of a Lake Chelan trip: the lake itself, the local wine scene, and the surrounding wilderness, without trying to cram everything in at once.

Getting Oriented
AFTERNOON
Plan to arrive mid-afternoon if possible. Your choice of accommodation sets the tone. Downtown puts you in the middle of the action with walkable shops and easy restaurant access, while a lakeside resort offers quieter mornings and better water views.
LATE AFTERNOON
Start easy. No need to overpack your first day. Take a slow walk around downtown, browse the shops, and grab a coffee. Two easy paths are worth knowing: the Chelan Riverwalk follows the river through town and is a great flat stroll, while the Lakeside Trail runs along the water and gives you views out over the lake. Either one works well for getting your bearings.
EVENING
Grab dinner at one of the downtown spots and take your time with it. After dinner, stroll through town and stop at one of the local ice cream parlors. Keep an eye out for a nice sunset along the way and head to a lakeside park if the light is good.
Even in summer, evenings cool off quickly. Bring a layer.
The Classic Chelan Day
MORNING
This is the core of a Lake Chelan trip. Renting a boat is the most popular option, since it lets you reach quieter coves and private swim spots. Paddleboarding or kayaking is a relaxed alternative if you want to stay closer to shore. Public beaches work well if you're skipping a rental altogether.
Go early. Afternoons get crowded, especially in peak summer. Reserve boats and jet-skis well in advance for summer visits.
LUNCH
Keep it simple and skip the heavy sit-down meal before heading into the wine country in the afternoon. Chelan has food trucks serving Mexican food with quick service and genuinely good food. Most have shaded seating right next to the truck. If burgers are more your style, Lakeview Drive-In is a local staple, and locals will tell you that Chelan Market Fresh has one of the best burgers in town. You could also combine lunch with your first winery visit, as a number of wineries have restaurants or small bites on site.
AFTERNOON
Lake Chelan became Washington State's latest American Viticultural Area in 2009 and now has over 40 wineries. Pick 2–3 max and don't rush them. Look for spots with lake overlook views and a laid-back atmosphere rather than trying to check every one off a list.
Many wineries take reservations, and it's recommended in summer. If you don't have one and need to drive out, call ahead to check how busy it is.
Wineries with Lake Views →EVENING
After a full lake and winery day, keep dinner low-key. Casual lakeside spots or takeout back at your rental are perfect. You'll probably be tired, so don't overplan this one.
Choose Your Adventure
OPTION A
Perfect if you want a slower, outdoorsy finish. Pick a hike based on your energy level: easy scenic trails along the water, moderate routes with lake views, or a more challenging push to higher elevation. Follow with a late brunch or coffee in town and a final walk along the lake.
OPTION B
If you want something genuinely memorable, take the ferry up-lake to Stehekin, a remote town reachable only by boat or small plane. It feels completely different from Chelan: quiet, historic, and surrounded by wilderness. It's a full-day commitment, so plan ahead and check the ferry schedule.
Worth it if you like unique, off-the-beaten-path experiences.
Stehekin Guide →beExploring / Lake Chelan
Best for walkability
Stay in the heart of town within easy walking distance of restaurants, shops, and the waterfront. Great for first-timers who want to explore on foot.
Best for views + relaxation
Resort properties along the lake offer direct water access, private beaches, and stunning views. Ideal if you're treating this as a proper getaway.
Best for a quieter stay
Just up the road from Chelan, Manson has a more laid-back character. It also has a number of wineries right in the downtown area, all within walking distance of each other, and often more affordable accommodation options.

Lake Chelan is best enjoyed slowly. Build in downtime and let the pace of the lake guide you.
Parking fills up, boat rentals go fast, and popular wineries get busy. Early mornings reward you with the best of everything.
Summers can be intense. Bring plenty of water, apply sunscreen before you leave the room, and take a midday break during peak hours.
Boat rentals and popular wineries fill up fast in summer, so book a few weeks out at minimum. For lodging, plan months in advance if you are visiting in July or August.
