#1 Thing to Do
Getting out on the water is the defining Lake Chelan experience. Whether you rent a boat, paddleboard along the shoreline, or find a spot to swim, the lake should be the center of your trip.
The most popular way to experience the lake. Rent a motorboat and explore quieter coves, find your own swim spot, and cover ground you cannot reach from shore. Jet ski rentals are also available near the waterfront and are a fun option for those who want more speed and freedom on the water. Book early. They go fast in summer.
A more relaxed option, great for staying close to shore and exploring the edges of the lake. Rentals are widely available near the waterfront.
The lake water is remarkably clear and warms up nicely by July and August. Even without a rental, you can find good swim spots at public beaches.
Go early. Afternoons get crowded and boat rentals fill up fast, especially on weekends in summer.
High-interest category
There are swimming spots around both Manson and Chelan, as well as other spots spread out around the lake. The water warms up nicely through summer and is remarkably clear.
Family-friendly beach in the Manson area with calm water, a swim area, and good parking. A great option if you want a more relaxed setting away from the busier town areas.
Don Morse Park has a large beach right in town with easy parking and lake access. The Chelan Riverwalk also has water access for swimming along its route. Both are convenient options for a spontaneous dip without driving anywhere.
Willow Point Park is a good option for those looking for a lower-key spot with lake access. In Manson, Old Swim Hole is a small, quiet park where dogs are welcome in the water. The further you get from downtown, the more elbow room you will find.
Lake Chelan AVA
Lake Chelan became Washington State's newest American Viticultural Area in 2009 and now has over 40 wineries. The combination of lake views and quality wine makes this one of the most enjoyable ways to spend an afternoon.
Pick 2–3 wineries max. Trying to rush through more than that takes the enjoyment out of it. Give yourself time to settle in at each one.
Prioritize wineries with lake overlook views and a laid-back atmosphere. The setting is often as good as the wine.
Use a shuttle service or designate a driver. Several operators run winery tours, and in the summer months a wine trolley also runs between wineries. Both are easy, stress-free options that let everyone in the group enjoy the visit.
Book popular wineries and tours in advance if you're visiting in peak summer.

Higher elevation routes into the backcountry. Best for experienced hikers who want to get away from the crowds entirely.
Great for kids
Lake Chelan has more than enough to keep families busy for several days. Between water activities, a waterslide park, and hands-on local experiences, kids and adults alike will find plenty to enjoy.
The local waterslide park overlooking the lake. Beyond the slides, Slidewaters also has a ropes course, gellyball, and a surf wave, making it a full afternoon of activities for families of all ages.
Located right next to Don Morse Park, there are go-karts and a putt-putt course side by side. A good option for a hot midday break or when kids need a change of pace from the water.
A hands-on activity unique to the Manson area. Families can press their own cider and take it home, making for a fun and memorable stop that kids and adults both enjoy.
The local vibe
The communities around Lake Chelan each have their own character and are worth exploring beyond the waterfront. Plan at least one evening in each if your schedule allows.
Walkable, friendly, and unpretentious. A good mix of shops, coffee spots, and restaurants all within easy distance of the waterfront. Perfect for an easy first or last evening.
A quieter, more laid-back alternative to Chelan. Closer to the wine country, with its own small-town character and less tourist traffic. Great if you want a slower pace.
Off the beaten path
Beyond the main attractions, Lake Chelan has a few experiences that are genuinely one-of-a-kind. These are worth knowing about if you have extra time or are looking for something different.
A remote community at the far northern end of the lake, accessible only by ferry or small plane. No roads connect it to the outside world. It is a completely different experience from Chelan: quiet, historic, and surrounded by wilderness. Worth it if you have the time.
The road along the south shore of the lake offers beautiful views and passes through the wine country. An easy way to explore more of the region without a lot of planning. For those looking to truly get off the beaten path and willing to drive a high clearance vehicle, the Grade Creek and Shady Pass forest service roads rise thousands of feet above the lake and open up dramatic views of the surrounding wilderness.

Start early, especially in summer. Parking, rentals, and wineries all get busy fast.
Don't overpack your schedule. The lake is best enjoyed slowly.
Plan around heat and crowds. Take a midday break; go early or late for the best experience.
Book rentals in advance. Boats and popular tours fill up weeks ahead in peak season.
Trying to visit too many wineries. Pick 2–3 and enjoy them properly.
Skipping lake time. It's the whole point, so don't let your schedule crowd it out.
Not planning for crowds. Summer weekends are busy; early starts make a big difference.
Underestimating travel time. The lake is long and the winery road takes longer than it looks on a map.
