Rent a boat and take the kids tubing, or keep it simple with a relaxed day at the beach. Either way, the lake is the anchor of the trip and the thing kids will remember most.
The waterslides, lazy river, and kid-friendly zones are a reliable hit across a wide range of ages. Plan a few hours here early in the day before the heat builds.
The cider pressing experience at Manson Growers is a great hands-on family activity. Kids get to press their own apple cider and take it home, which makes it one of the more memorable things you can do in the area.

Keep It Low-Key
AFTERNOON
Plan to arrive mid-afternoon if possible. Travel days take energy out of kids, so keep expectations low. Get checked in, let everyone decompress, and save the bigger activities for Day 2.
EVENING
Head into downtown for a casual dinner and a walk around town. Both kids and adults tend to like the low-key small-town feel. Most shops close between 5pm and 6pm, so stroll before you sit down to eat. Finish with an ice cream stop at one of the local parlors — a reliable crowd-pleaser at the end of a travel day.
Keep the evening flexible. If kids are tired, an early night is the right call.
The Anchor Day
MORNING
Slidewaters is a waterslide park right on the lake in Chelan and one of the most reliable ways to keep kids happy for a few hours. It has waterslides, a lazy river, and kid-friendly zones suited to different ages and energy levels. Plan to arrive early and give yourself a few hours here before the heat and crowds peak.
Buy tickets in advance if possible, especially on summer weekends. Lines build quickly by mid-morning.
LUNCH
Keep it simple and refuel before the afternoon. Chelan has food trucks serving Mexican food with quick service and genuinely good food. Most have shaded seating right next to the truck, which works well when kids need to sit down and eat without waiting long. Lakeview Drive-In is a solid burger option that kids tend to like.
AFTERNOON
Manson Bay Park is one of the best options for families with younger kids. It has a protected swim area with calmer, shallower water, a grass area nearby for breaks, and a generally relaxed atmosphere. If you are based in Chelan, Don Morse Park and Lakeside Park are both worth knowing: each has a beach, open grass areas, and playground structures, making them easy spots to settle in for the afternoon.
EVENING
After a full day of water activities, keep dinner simple and close to wherever you are staying. Casual spots in Chelan or Manson work well. An early night is completely fine after a day like this.
Optional — Pick What Fits
OPTION A
Head to Manson Growers for their cider pressing experience. Kids can take fresh apples and press their own cider, making it an interactive, hands-on activity rather than just watching. Everyone goes home with apple cider they made themselves, which makes it a memorable one. It works well as a break from water activities and gives parents a moment to relax.
OPTION B
Go-karts are a short, high-energy activity that works well for older kids who need one more thing before heading home. Easy to fit into a morning without a lot of planning or time commitment.
OPTION C
A short trail close to town can be a great way to finish the trip if the family has the energy. Stick to something with a manageable distance and a clear payoff. The Chelan Butte Trailhead is just outside of town and gives access to a variety of trails, some with good views of the lake.
Summer hiking around Lake Chelan can be hot with little shade. Start early and bring plenty of water.
OPTION D
If the family is tired or has an early departure, a slow morning is the right call. Coffee in town, a walk by the lake, and time for kids to play before getting in the car. The Chelan Riverwalk and the Lakeside Trail are both flat, easy walks right in town and a good way to ease out of the trip.

Tip: prioritize space and proximity over luxury when traveling with kids.
Best for easy logistics
Walking distance from restaurants, shops, and the waterfront. Easy for families who want everything accessible without extra driving.
Best for space + convenience
More room for families, direct water access, and the flexibility of a kitchen. A great option if you want to avoid eating out for every meal.
Best for a quieter stay
A short drive from Chelan with a more relaxed atmosphere and generally more affordable options. A good base for families who want to avoid the busiest areas.

Two big activities in one day is a recipe for tired, cranky kids. Pick one anchor activity and build the rest of the day around it.
Kids need time to just play without a schedule. A beach afternoon with no agenda is often the best part of the trip for everyone.
Especially in summer. Kids overheat and get hungry faster than adults. Having snacks on hand saves a lot of friction throughout the day.
Beat the heat and the crowds by getting your main activity done before noon. This is especially important on the hottest summer days.

What works for adults does not work for families. Leave room for things to take longer than planned and for kids to change their minds.
Not all beach areas are equal for younger kids. Manson Bay Park and Don Morse Park both have protected swim areas with calmer, shallower water. Stick to spots like these rather than open, unprotected beach areas.
Downtime is not wasted time on a family trip. It is usually when kids are happiest and parents are most relaxed. Build it in on purpose.
A winery or two is manageable, but planning multiple winery visits with kids in tow makes for a long afternoon. Keep adult-focused activities short and save them for when kids are in a good mood.
