Overview

Chatter Creek Campground sits about 16 miles from Leavenworth on Icicle Creek Road at the point where the pavement ends. The campground is set well off the road and tucked into thick forest — dense canopy overhead, deep shade through most of the day, and Chatter Creek threading through the sites. Twelve single campsites are first-come, first-served, and a separate group site is reservable through Recreation.gov. One vault toilet and a potable water source serve the campground, and garbage service is provided.

The campground sits between two trailheads: the Chatter Creek Trailhead about half a mile to the east, and the Icicle Gorge Trailhead less than half a mile to the west. The Icicle Gorge Trail is also accessible directly across Icicle Creek Road from the campground entrance, and the Icicle Gorge Upper Loop connects from the group site. Campsite 5 is the standout individual site — a short wooden bridge over Chatter Creek separates it from the main parking area, giving it a private feel that most roadside campsites never approach. The creek itself is a constant presence at camp, audible from every site.

Activities

Icicle Gorge Loop

Icicle Gorge Loop

The Icicle Gorge Trailhead is less than half a mile west of the campground, and the trail is also accessible directly across Icicle Creek Road from the campground entrance. The Icicle Gorge Upper Loop connects from the group site. The loop is a 4.3-mile round trip that follows both sides of Icicle Creek through a narrow basalt canyon — one of the most scenic and accessible hikes in Icicle Canyon with only about 200 feet of elevation gain. A good option for families or as a warm-up before a bigger outing. No permit required.

Chatter Creek Trail

The Chatter Creek Trailhead is about half a mile east of the campground. The trail climbs steeply from Icicle Creek into the Enchantments wilderness, gaining roughly 5,000 feet en route to Lake Edna — a remote alpine lake at the edge of the Enchantments permit zone. The trail can be overgrown in sections, particularly in mid-summer. The route is less trafficked than the Stuart Lake and Colchuck corridors. The wilderness permit requirement applies to overnight use in the Enchantments permit zone.

Chatter Creek

Chatter Creek runs directly through the campground on its way to Icicle Creek below. The creek is cold and clear, and several sites are within steps of the water. It is a small creek — good for cooling off but not large enough to swim in. Washington fishing regulations apply to Chatter Creek — check WDFW for current season and gear rules.

Things to Know

directions_walk

Campsite 5 is accessed by crossing a small wooden bridge over Chatter Creek. It is the most isolated site in the campground — worth asking about specifically when you arrive, as the bridge crossing gives it a completely different feel from the road-side sites.

forest

The campground is surrounded by dense forest with heavy canopy. Shade is extensive through most of the day — a real asset in summer heat, but it also means the sites stay damp longer after rain and can feel cooler at night.

event_available

The group site is reservable through Recreation.gov and must be booked in advance — it goes fast for summer weekends. All 12 single sites are first-come, first-served with no reservation option.

construction

The last stretch of Icicle Creek Road past Johnny Creek becomes unpaved. The road is passable for most passenger vehicles in dry conditions, but large trailers and low-clearance vehicles should proceed cautiously. Check road conditions with the Leavenworth Ranger District before arrival.

water_drop

Potable water and garbage service are provided at the campground. One vault toilet serves all sites. Confirm current water availability with the Leavenworth Ranger District before your trip, as seasonal shutoffs can occur.
