Overview

Rock Island Campground sits about 17 miles from Leavenworth on Icicle Creek Road, near the point where the road becomes noticeably rough. The campground is not a single loop but four separate areas spread across both sides of Icicle Creek Road and both banks of Icicle Creek — giving it more variety than most campgrounds in the canyon. Some sites have views down to the water, while many are set back in the trees without a direct sightline to the creek. The Icicle Gorge Loop trail passes right through camp, and there is a popular swim area right next to the bridge that campers use to cool off during the summer months. The Jack Trout Trailhead is just south of the campground. All 22 sites are first-come, first-served. Each of the four areas has its own vault toilet, and potable water is available.

The four areas offer distinct camping experiences. Sites 1 through 3 are right at the eastern entrance — just off Icicle Creek Road, perched directly above the creek with some tree cover but also open to the sky. Sites 4 through 9 are to the west, accessible from either Icicle Creek Road or Forest Service Road 7609, with more shade and close proximity to the river. Sites 10 through 18 sit farther west on FS 7609 in thick forest — the shadiest and most secluded section of the campground. Sites 19 through 22 are across the bridge over Icicle Creek on the south bank, with 19 and 20 on the east side of the bridge and 21 and 22 on the west side.

Activities

Icicle Gorge Loop

Icicle Gorge Loop

The Icicle Gorge Loop trail passes right next to Rock Island Campground, making it one of the most trail-accessible campgrounds in Icicle Canyon. The 4.3-mile loop follows both sides of Icicle Creek through a narrow basalt gorge with only about 200 feet of elevation gain — a good option for families or a short outing before a bigger day. No permit required.

Icicle Gorge Trip Report →

Jack Trout Trail

The Jack Trout Trailhead is just south of the campground. The trail climbs away from Icicle Creek into the ridgeline above the canyon, providing a longer and more strenuous outing than the Icicle Gorge Loop. It is a less-trafficked route with good views of the upper Icicle Canyon as you gain elevation.

Icicle Creek

The campsites in the 1–3 and 19–22 areas are perched directly above Icicle Creek, and the river is a constant visual and audible presence at camp. The water is cold and clear year-round — fed by snowmelt from the Enchantments above. Washington state fishing regulations apply; check WDFW for current season and gear rules before fishing.

Things to Know

map

Rock Island is not a single campground loop — it is four separate areas spread across both sides of Icicle Creek Road and the creek. When you arrive, decide which area you want before driving in. Each area has a different feel and a different entrance.

wb_sunny

Sites 1 through 3 at the eastern entrance get some sun through the trees and have the most direct views down to Icicle Creek. Sites 10 through 18, farther west on Forest Service Road 7609, are in thick forest with heavy shade — cooler in summer but slower to dry after rain.

directions_walk

Sites 19 through 22 are on the south bank of Icicle Creek, accessed via a bridge. They are separated from the other three areas by the creek, which gives them a quieter and more isolated feel. Sites 19 and 20 are on the east side of the bridge; 21 and 22 are on the west side.

construction

The road gets rough in the final stretch leading to the campground. Most passenger vehicles handle it fine in dry conditions, but low-clearance vehicles and large trailers should proceed with caution. Check current road conditions with the Leavenworth Ranger District before your trip.

water_drop

Potable water is available at the campground. Each of the four areas has its own vault toilet. Confirm current water status with the Leavenworth Ranger District before your trip, as seasonal shutoffs can occur.
