Highway 20
The North Cascades Highway is the access variable that matters most here. When it is closed, Maple Pass, Blue Lake, Cutthroat Lake, and most Washington Pass ski tours are out — valley plans are not.
Seasonal closure
Highway 20 typically closes mid-November through mid-April. Opening dates shift by several weeks depending on snowpack. When it is shut, the drive from Seattle is via US-2 and US-97 through Wenatchee — about an hour longer.
What it cuts off
Maple Pass Loop, Blue Lake, Cutthroat Lake, Washington Pass Overlook, and most Highway 20 ski tours. Valley Nordic, downtown, Pearrygin Lake, and Twisp River access stay open regardless of pass status.
Winter gate location
On the Winthrop side, a gate at Silver Star keeps Delancey Ridge and the Powder Cache as realistic day tours. A gate held at Early Winters turns those into long approaches or sled days. Check WSDOT before every backcountry plan.
